Last week I went to Tawau, Semporna, Mataking Island and Mabul Island for shooting. I came to Tawau before and had visited Semporna and an island called Sibuan in 2006.

There are a few thousand of fishermen who live in these islands, nationality unknown. Some build their simple huts above the sea (they call it home, most are dilapidated ) , some stayed in their small boats with the family, while some stayed in the same island where the beautiful holiday resorts are located. I saw so many children running around, almost all of them without schooling.

Dearest uncle,
Thank you for sharing with us the photos that you had taken from your trips - especially the ones on fishermen. I can never imagine such poverty & hardships. It puts to shame all of us who whine in these so called 'tough' economical times. These pictures teach me to count my blessings one by one. Thanks again & keep sharing with us.

Dear Grand Uncle,
The pictures that you took are absolutely breath-taking. The exposure balance between the sky and the foreground is amazing and the scene is beautifully framed =) I am just curious as to what type/brand of camera do you use? Also which lens attachment did you take the shots with?

Dear Joanne and Yin Kui,

Glad to hear from you. You are right, we should be grateful of what we have.

I'm using canon 1Ds mk3 for some of the shots. My favorite lens is 24-105mm f4 L. I sometime use gradual neutral grey filter to overcome the exposure balance problems. I'm still learning.

Excellent use of your grad ND filters in the three landscape shots, CK. The top shot of the fishermen's houses looks almost like an HDR image.
